Written Power

WAREING'S THEORY 1999


3 types of power

POLITICAL POWER – power held by the law/politicians/in court

PERSONAL POWER – power because of your occupation or role (e.g. teacher)

SOCIAL GROUP POWER – age/race/gender (social variables)
White upper class males = have the most power
Parents = they’re older so have more power

INSTRUMENTAL POWER – power used to maintain authority and to enforce

INFLUENTIAL POWER – using power to influence your actions (to persuade)

POWER IN DISCOURSE – the way is manifested (shown) in language

POWER BEHIND DISCOURSE – the contextual reasons for that power (why that power is allowed in the first place)


IDEOLOGY – a set of belief systems, a way of perceiving the world (attitude to what you think is right)
